Day 12

Caroline's outfit:
Wrap- Marshalls
Scarf- Hecho a mano (Puerto Rico)
Cardigan- Old Navy
Shirt- Forever 21
Skirt- American Eagle
Shoes- Payless

Alexandra's Outfit:
Shirt: Charlotte Russe
Skirt: LOFT
Jacket: Forever21
Tights: Kohls
Boots: Urban Outfitters
Necklace: Present from Melanie!

Caroline: Grad School is killing me. BIG TIME!

So far, so good.

Entonces, Pao y Lynd me tienen castigada.

AH!

Alexandra: Eclecticism

Whenever people ask me what kind of food, music, movies, books, etc I like, I have a difficult time responding. Yes, I am one of those exasperating few who says they like everything. I like to get up and dance to Gaga and Bieber, hate life to Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes, cook to Coltrane, Billie and Ella, then turn on some Biggie when I'm getting ready to go out. My favorite films tend to be ones such as Lost in Translation and A Single Man, yet I can quote the bromantic works of Judd Apatow and the Farrelly brothers verbatim.

My mother taught me the word "eclectic" at a young age to describe my taste. This eclecticism of mine also presents itself in my manner of dress. One day I aim for boho, another for masculine, another for classically feminine, and still another for clean and simple. Today, I grabbed a little bit of everything, mixing patterns, fabrics, and colors. After all, variety is the spice of life.

Day 11

Caroline's outfit:
Wrap- Gift/Amsterdam
Shirt- JC Penney
Skirt- Thrifted
Necklace- Gift
Shoes- Charlotte Russe3

Alexandra's outfit:
Dress/boots: Forever21
Scarf: Marshalls
Sunglasses: H&M
Tights: Macy's

¡si! Hasta eso se veía bonito.

A ver qué milagros puedo hacer… Duh!

Pendientes!

Alexandra: Oh it's so cute, it's so French

For some reason people ask me if I'm French before even learning that I am studying French literature and have been speaking French since I was a toddler. When I answer, "No, why?" They respond "Because you dress like a French person." What does that even mean? Is there a certain way that French people dress that screams "BONJOUR JE SUIS FRANÇAISE! Croissant, frites, Moulin Rouge, crêpes, fromage"? Apparently I have that certain je ne sais quoi that manifests itself in my clothing style.

It reminds me of a scene in one of my favorite films "Before Sunrise", a love story about an American man and a French woman who meet one night in Vienna and fall in love. Fast forward to 3:18, specifically 4:05, when Jesse and Céline are just getting to know each other and Jesse asks Céline what her pet peeves are.

So today I wore black if only to sardonically embrace the stereotype of the French woman dressed all in black. C'est la vie.

Day 10

Caroline's outfit:
Cardigan- Kmart
Shirt- Walmart
Scarf- Gift from Argentina
Skirt- Thrifted
Shoes- Payless

Alexandra's outfit:
Shirt/jeggings: Old Navy
Cardigan/boots: Target
Scarf: H&M

Caroline: Sos boluda, Che!

Alexandra: Pink is my favorite color

That's a lie, but it is a cheerful color. There is a theory that the colors you surround yourself with can affect your mood either positively or negatively. While the scientific validity of this theory may be questionable, I do believe that surrounding yourself with bright colors can certainly wake you up if only due to the "Holy crap that's bright!" effect. With a mere three weeks remaining in the semester, it is only natural to feel overwhelmed and overtired, but wearing my bright pink cardigan all day definitely made me alert today.

Day 9

Caroline's outfit:
Wrap- Bijou (Puerto Rico)
Shirt- GAP
Cardigan- American Eagle (thrifted)
Skirt- Goodwill
Shoes- Rainbow
Necklace- Gift from Melanie, my cousin.

Alexandra's outfit:
Dress: Old Navy
Scarf/shoes: Forever21
Cardigan/bracelet: gifts from Mom & Dad

Caroline: Piensa verde/Think green

Alexandra: That is O.O.C. Bananas. I die.

Whenever I think of maxi dresses paired with wedges and tons of accessories I think of the Los Angeles hippie-at-heart Rachel Zoe and her plethora of ridiculous sayings. For those of you haven't experienced the magic of the Rachel Zoe Project yet on Bravo, Rachel Zoe is a stylist to the stars. Her clientele includes such fantastic ladies as Anne Hathaway, Liv Tyler, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Hudson to name a few. Rachel is very eccentric and whenever she is particularly in love with an outfit she'll typically say "That is bananas. Buh. nah. nuhs" or the classic "Ohmigod, I die."

Although I love being a graduate student in French literature studying the meaning of existence in the works of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, I do often dream of following in Rachel's footsteps in the artificial superficial world of fashion. It's my thing, let it go.

Day 8

Caroline's outfit:
Cardigan/Watch- Kohls
Wrap- Marshalls
Shirt- Forever21
Skirt- Goodwill
Shoes- Payless
Necklace- Gift from a student.

Alexandra's outfit:
Top/skirt: Anthropologie
Shoes: ShoeDazzle
Bracelet: Gift from Mom

Alexandra: Sun in the sky you know how I feel...

Finally! Sunshine! Huzzah! The weather in Normal today is absolutely beautiful. What is it about sunshine after months of grey weather that can put you in a good mood even if you're bogged down with work? Who knows!

It was time to put on my lovely spring outfit that I longed to wear on Monday. Today whenever I look down at my skirt I see pretty little colorful birds which help me to pretend that I'm on a beach somewhere drinking mojitos instead of sitting in a dim cubicle office writing my French existentialism term paper. A girl can dream...

Day 7

Caroline's outfit:
Wrap-Marshalls
Shirt- Old Navy
Skirt- TJ Maxx
Shoes- Payless
Watch- Gold City (Puerto Rico)
Necklace- From a Hare Krishna’ couple on the streets in Puerto Rico!

Alexandra's outfit:
Dress/cardigan: Target
Leggings: Wal-Mart
Shoes: TOMs
Necklace: Inherited family heirloom

Caroline: Hare Krishna Love

Alexandra: Comfortable and a good cause

I am going to Europe this summer. All summer. Freakin' sweet, right? Given that I will be on the move for 11 weeks, it would be considered wise to pack light, pack comfortable, and pack items can be mixed and matched.

My colleague, Isabel, swears by TOMs for travel, or life in general. The girl has like 37 pairs, give or take 33. At her behest, I ordered a basic pair of navy canvas TOMs last week that could be worn with a variety of outfits. As I was leaving my apartment this morning in high heels, I opened my front door to discover that my TOMs had arrived. Oh happy day! Forgoing my super classée outfit, I swiftly ran upstairs and put on my brand new TOMs. It's love. Watch out Europe!

P.S.: Not only are TOMs incredibly comfortable, light, and take up little space in a suitcase, they also support a great cause. For every pair purchased, TOMs will provide a pair of shoes for a child in need. Check out their site at http://www.toms.com/

Day 6

Caroline's outfit:
Shirt- Old Navy
Skirt- Kmart
Shoes- Rainbow
Wrap- Gift from London

Alexandra's outfit:
Dress/necklace: Present from Mom
Sweater: Target
Leggings: Old Navy
Boots: Forever21

Caroline: Ayer estaba en 82 grados. Not anymore.

Bleh!

Alexandra: Flapper meets Grampa

Yesterday it was almost 80 degrees in Normal. Naturally, I set out a perfectly lovely spring outfit full of bright colors and fun designs to wear today. Yet, as that jerk Murphy would have it, today it was 40 degrees, overcast and windy.

I have always loved this dress that my mother bought for me without it being any special occasion (aren't moms great sometimes?), because when paired with the long pearl necklace it looks like something that could have been worn by flappers in the '20s. Add to it the incomparably comfortable grandpa sweater and I begrudgingly faced another grey Illinois day.

Maybe tomorrow Mr. Blue Sky will come back and my lovely spring outfit will have a chance to shine.
